The man found the skeletal remains of one dog and another near death from starvation. Both had been chained and left to die.
"We went down there and she was on a big logging chain. I cut her loose and tried walking her up here and she kept falling down. She was starving to death," Tony Pritchett said.
The landlord’s wife posted on Facebook that the power had been turned off at the home off Highway 14 a couple months ago and the tenants had since vacated the property. Her husband and some workers went to the home Thursday to clean it out and, behind the house, found the starving dog and the bones of the other.
Facebook post from Vickey Pritchett: Okay I need help! I am completely horrified! Tony went to go on one of our rental properties, off of Highway 14, the power was cut off a couple months ago and had been vacated him and his workers went to go clean it out walked around back and found this poor dog chained, skin and bones, almost dead, another one had already died bones laying there with a chain, he called Greer police they said it was out of their jurisdiction [and] to call Greenville County. He proceeded to call Greenville County they told him to call Animal Control. He has not been able to get in touch with anyone at Animal Control. Does anyone have any idea how to handle the situation? The people that did this to these dogs need to be charged and this one dog needs to be nursed back to health, is there any vet out there that can take this dog and help save its life for no charge, if anyone out there has any information that they can give me to help me please as soon as possible post it, I am posting pictures of this poor dog, I am completely horrified! |
The woman posted a plea for help Thursday morning on Facebook after trying to reach Greenville County Animal Control several times.
"If we had waited, (the dog) wouldn't be here today. If we had left her tied up, waiting for someone to come or waiting for someone to respond, she would have died," Vickey Pritchett said.
She posted an update on Friday morning saying: “I am so grateful for the responses I have received, an outpouring of people shared information that has helped us be able to be in contact with the right people to get help for her.
“She is currently being evaluated at a vet, where she can receive medical treatments. She was taken yesterday afternoon and will remain with the vet until no longer necessary. She has been starved for approximately four to eight weeks, was only able to survive on rain water.
“If she survives, she will have a long way to go to regain her health. Praying that her organs are not damaged. She shrank down to less than half of her original size.
“She was walking yesterday, drinking and was able to eat some. She wagged her tail and was licking my husband’s hand as she lay on his lap.
“She is at a vet currently. I will give updates at I get them. Animal Control has opened an investigation. They are pressing charges. I was told they would pursue this crime. They have the names of the owners. Thank you all for sharing all the contacts and information that you did with us, because of that we might be able to save her. The ones responsible will have to pay! I will post updates as they come in.
“Please keep this lil' dog in your prayers.”
The dog, named Maggie by the Pritchetts, has seen a veterinarian and has been treated for malnutrition, parasites and heartworms. She has a small mass that will need to be removed, Shelly Simmons, Animal Control division manager said.
Simmons said the dog will be fed several small meals a day until her stomach readjusts to eating. Maggie weighs about 28 pounds; vets says she should weigh at least 45 pounds.
Simmons she expects that the dog will be able to make a complete recovery.
Simmons said she thinks the dog is a Catahoula - Boxer, possibly pit bull mix. She said the female dog is probably about 2 years old.
Simmons said the shelter has a Second Chance fund to help cover the cost of taking care of severely ill or injured animals like Maggie.
The Pritchetts, meanwhile, plan to give the dog to a family friend once she recovers.
