The department says that Monday, an officer shot a dog that charged at him. The incident occurred in the 1400 block of Delafield while the officer was investigating a report that a 9-year-old child had been bitten by a pit bull. Video of the incident was released Wednesday along with a statement.
"Sadly, ... an officer had to shoot a pit bull dog to prevent the dog from attacking him. In that incident, the officer was investigating a report of a 9-year-old child being bit by a pit bull dog and had just made contact with the dog owner. Two officers were standing near the street in the 1400 Block of Delafield when that dog charged and attempted to bite one of the officers. The dog attack on the 9-year-old child is still under investigation."
Police say it is the second time in two days when a dog attempted to bite or succeeded in biting an officer.
On Wednesday, a sergeant was bitten on the back of his calf at the Heritage Apartment in the 1400 block of west 16th Street. The department says the officer was walking toward his patrol vehicle after responding to a public intoxication arrest when the pit bull bit him.
MPD says the officer received medical attention and two dogs at the apartment were seized by animal control and quarantined. The owner was cited for animals at large and no rabies vaccinations. A dangerous dog hearing has been requested due to the incident.
The city receives about 20 reports of animal bites each year, according to the police department.
"It is illegal to have an animal at large in public in the City of Mount Pleasant. These two incidents were not stray dogs running loose. These dogs belonged to people and were intentionally allowed to run outside in a public area without being on a leash," MPD said in a statement.
