Minnesota: Amanda Anker, 28, and Steven Nelson, 36, arrested in relation to drugs
MINNESOTA -- One man faces a felony drug charge and one woman has been charged with aiding an offender following a search of a residence in Zimmerman.

Steven Douglas Nelson, 36, of Zimmerman, was charged May 11 before Judge James Dehn in Isanti County District Court in Cambridge with felony fifth-degree drug possession, subsequent conviction. Bail was set at $70,000 without conditions or $35,000 with conditions and next court appearance for May 19.

Amanda Sue Anker, 28, also of Zimmerman, was charged May 11 before Judge Amy Brosnahan in Isanti County District Court with felony aiding an offender to avoid arrest by harboring or concealment, and misdemeanor obstruction of the legal process. Bail was set at $10,000 without conditions or $5,000 with conditions and next court appearance for June 15.

The arrests happened after law enforcement arrived at Anker’s residence, located along the 25570 block of Sloth Street Northwest in Zimmerman in Isanti County. Law enforcement had received information Nelson, who had an outstanding felony warrant out for his arrest, was staying at the residence.

According to the criminal complaint:

On May 9, Isanti County Deputy John Gillquist received information that Nelson was at a residence in the city of Zimmerman, who had an outstanding felony warrant out for his arrest.

Gillquist proceeded to the location and found Nelson’s vehicle parked in the driveway. Gillquist waited for Isanti County Deputies Dave Matchinsky and Sean Connolly to arrive as backup. The officers knocked on the door, which was answered by Anker, who is known to be the girlfriend of Nelson.

Gillquist talked with Anker, who indicated Nelson was not at the residence and she had been driving his car for the last few days. She believed he was staying at his mother’s house.

The officers asked for permission to search the house for Nelson. Anker then began to get very nervous and her hands were shaking as she was attempting to light a cigarette. Anker indicated she was concerned about her dogs, which she claimed were vicious. Anker then went back into the house to secure her dogs into a corner bathroom to allow the deputies inside to search, still insisting that Nelson was not there. Connolly warned her not to put the dogs into a room where Nelson was hiding or she could be charged with obstructing the legal process or aiding an offender.

Gillquist and Connolly then swept the available areas of the house looking for Nelson. During this sweep, Gillquist noticed a small glass vial near the bed that contained a clear plastic bag. Nelson was not found in this initial sweep.

The deputies then asked Anker to move the dogs to another room so they could search the bathroom. Anker complied, and the deputies noted the dogs did not appear vicious.

Nelson was then located behind the shower curtain and placed in handcuffs. Gillquist asked about the vial he had noticed earlier, and Nelson indicated it was his and it contained marijuana.

Gillquist then seized the bag and noticed it contained a white crystal-like substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine.
