New Zealand: Seal pup rescued by police officer after hiding under a car

NEW ZEALAND -- A trespassing seal pup has been detained after police found it loitering under a car.

Steve the seal was spotted poking his head out from under the car at Wellington's Maritime Police Unit parking lot in New Zealand.

Conservationists said he had sought shelter from the cold after he lost his mother and narrowly avoided being run over by the driver, Stuff.co.nz reported.

'We went to see and he was under the car – he's a little fella,' Senior Sergeant Dave Houston said.

Officials at the Department of Conservation said the seal was an age where pups begin to explore and can get lost from their mothers.

They planned to release it on the south coast.

Snr Sgt Houston said the car owner was taken aback to find police poking a broom under his car.

'We asked him if it was his seal. He said it wasn't.'

He said it was unlikely the driver would have seen the pup when he arrived to his car.
