Authorities have captured one dog possibly involved in the attack and are still searching for two others.
Janelle Davis said her girlfriend of eight years was walking to work when three dogs approached her on Bonnie Street, near the Holy Tabernacle of Jesus Christ church.
Authorities have not identified the woman who was attacked, but Davis said it was her girlfriend Ivory Ellis.
After shaking the dogs off and running for about 100 yards, the dogs began attacking her again, police said. A nearby resident then came out and got the dogs off of the woman.
"She got chunks bitten out of her," Davis said. "She could have died yesterday."
Police said Ellis was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with serious injuries to both of her arms and legs. Davis said Ellis has 121 stitches total throughout her body.
Cumberland County Animal Control Director Dr. John Lauby said the victim is likely beginning treatment for rabies since the dogs have not been caught to be tested for the disease.
Lauby said Wednesday that Animal Control officers have captured one of the three dogs. However, he said investigators are currently looking into conflicting reports regarding that dog's role in the attack.
"We are not sure whether the dog participated in the dog attack," Lauby said.
Davis said two of the dogs recently attacked another person in the area. Animal Control has not received any reports of such an attack.
"We haven't had any other calls at this location," Lauby said.
Davis said she believed the dogs belonged to a person who lived on Bonnie Street. Lauby said the dogs are strays.
"A woman's been feeding them, and she's made us aware of that," Lauby said.
The woman has agreed to confine the animals when they show up to eat, Lauby said, and will notify Animal Control.
Lauby said the incident remains under investigation.
