CONNECTICUT -- The director of the Meriden Humane Society has been arrested for allegedly forging a rabies certificate.
Police say Marlena DiBianco turned herself in on Wednesday afternoon. They say she forged a rabies certificate for an animal that had not been vaccinated, leading the person who adopted that animal to think it had been.
Police say they started investigating DiBianco in April of 2015 when allegations of misconduct were reported.
DiBianco is charged with second-degree forgery. She was released on a promise to appear in court on September 20.
The Meriden Humane Society issued a statement insisting this was a "one time" incident. However, due to the Meriden Humane Society loudly crowing that they're a "no kill" shelter, I have my own doubts about that. The pressure on shelters, especially ones that disparage "kill" shelters and tout themselves as "no kill", to find homes for all the animals is very high. I'm sure Di Bianco was under that very pressure to get these animals out of the shelter, no matter what, and this prompted her to falsify the rabies paperwork. Of course, she hasn't been convicted of anything - these are all allegations at this point.
