Pennsylvania: PETA offers $5,000 reward for information on dog abuser

PENNSYLVANIA -- Animal rights group PETA offered a $5,000 reward Tuesday for information leading to the capture of whoever abused an emaciated Boxer mix discovered last week in Throop.

“It’s heartbreaking to imagine the agony and terror that this dog felt as she was slowly starved and then dumped like a piece of trash and left to die,” PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien said in a statement. “PETA urges anyone with information about this case to come forward immediately — before the culprit hurts anyone else.”

Throop police discovered the dog — dubbed Chelsea by the county’s humane officer — Aug. 22 on Pancoast Street. She weighed 12 pounds when authorities discovered her. Officials say she should weigh between 35 and 40 pounds.

A witness saw a man in a black Mitsubishi Galant near the dog that morning and police investigated a possible link. No suspects have been identified.

“We’re hopeful the reward will give the case the break it needs,” said Moira Colley, a PETA spokeswoman.

Chelsea gained nearly three pounds since receiving emergency veterinary care, humane officer Sandy Scala said. Despite her suffering, she said, Chelsea remains a loving dog with a particular fondness for children.

Officer Scala hopes the reward will loosen tongues.

“Money talks,” she said. “It’s proven to have gotten people to flip and give out tips and information and this is a case where we want to catch the person. It’s hard to believe that humanity can do this.”

Anyone with information should contact Officer Scala at Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 570-586-3700, ext. 510 or Throop police.
