Police said they were called to a report of an animal in distress on Saturday.
Responding officers located the dog, a male Golden Retriever, which appeared to be severely malnourished. The dog, dubbed Lucky, was taken by Animal Control to an animal hospital for treatment.
Witnesses told police they hadn’t seen the owner of the property – which appeared to be abandoned – for more than two weeks.
“I think he was very lucky. If it was a few days later or a week later, it might have been a sad story,” said Coventry Animal Control Officer Matt McCormick. “He’s clearly underweight. He’s very skinny, all his ribs show, you can see his hip bones, you can see some of his spinal chord.”
According to police, 33-year-old Sean O’Leary turned himself into police on Thursday.
He is facing several cruelty charges, including failure to feed animals, inadequate living conditions, and failing to vaccinate against rabies.
Police said Lucky is currently in the care of Animal Control officers, who are working to get him healthy. In these updated photos, he's already looking better.
McCormick said he encourages anyone who might suspect animal abuse to contact animal control.

“I’d rather have you call us and we went out there and it was nothing instead of you waiting and it could have turned out unfortunate and the animal does not make it,” he told Eyewitness News.
Once Lucky is healthy again, he will be put up for adoption. Anyone with questions should contact Coventry Animal Control at (401) 822-9106.
