TENNESSEE -- Dogs, cats, chickens and horses were seized from a reported animal cruelty situation in Hardin County, Tennessee.
Animal Rescue Corps, along with Hardin County deputies, seized the animals from deplorable conditions on a property in Savannah, about two hours from Nashville.
Dogs, mostly Chihuahuas but also included several large-breed dogs, six cats, eight chickens and two horses were seized from the property.
An unknown mount of animal remains is believed to be buried on the property and an excavation team is working to recover them.
“Animals have been dying on this property for years. We have an excavation team working in extreme heat here trying to recover any remains that may be useful to law enforcement’s case” said Animal Rescue Corps President Scotlund Haisley. “But for the survivors, this will be their last day in this hell. We have not found a single healthy animal on this property.”
The animals seized apparently didn't have access to food, clean water and were found in filthy pens and running loose around piles of garbage.
Dogs, several who were underweight exhibited various illnesses and injuries, including missing eyes, external parasites, conjunctivitis, and traumatic hernias, tumors and other untreated injuries.
The owner was allegedly also being investigated for animal cruelty in Maine, but fled before charges were filed. The owner was arrested and released on bond.
All of the animals will receive full medical exams starting Tuesday.
