Arizona: Kevin Horrell, 35, arrested for animal abuse accused of throwing dog against wall, breaking its leg which had to be amputated

ARIZONA -- A Lake Havasu City man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after police received reports that he threw a dog against a wall, breaking its leg.

Kevin Casey Horrell, 35, is in Mohave County Jail on charges for felony animal cruelty and disorderly conduct. The dog’s left hind leg had to be amputated as a result of the injury.

Police said Horrell was upset with the dog’s owner and began yelling at her. Reports said he then began “charging” the dog while it was sitting near the owner.

The owner told police Horrell was upset because the dog had urinated on his side of the bed the night prior. The next morning she told police Horrell was still angry and began to yell at her about the dog.

Horrell later told police he never hurt the dog and he was woken up by the owner who was blaming him for hurting the dog. He told police he did not know why the owner was blaming him for the dog’s injuries.

“She had her eyes closed because she was afraid Kevin would hurt the dog,” police reports stated. “When she opened her eyes she saw the dog flying through the living room and into the kitchen. She heard the dog hit something, she thinks a wall, and then start crying.”

Reports said the small dog then attempted to get away by pulling itself with its front legs and eventually made it into a bedroom where it hid under a bed.

The incident happened on Sunday evening and the owner could not take the dog into the vet until the following morning. The owner did not initially call police because she was afraid of Horrell, she told police.

Police contacted and arrested Horrell on Wednesday afternoon due to the owner’s statement and inconsistencies of their statements.
