FLORIDA -- A Florida man will spend time behind bars after he pleaded guilty to bashing his girlfriend's dog to death.

Jan Cornel Henry Jr, 42, has been sentenced to three years in prison for animal cruelty in connection to an incident involving a dog described as being small white with curly hair.

He was arrested in March when deputies found the dog dead, and wedged beneath Henry's couch after he had slammed it repeatedly against a wall, investigators said.

Deputies also found two gashes in the living room wall with blood splatters nearby and fresh blood on Henry's pants, according to the arrest report.

During the violent act, Henry had bashed the animal with such force that it broke the dog's neck and two back legs, The Orlando Sentinel reported.

Henry's girlfriend had called police on March 6, reporting the incident.

She told police the couple had argued and that she was trying to leave, but Henry would not relinquish her dog.

During the 911 call, she screamed 'He's killing my dog,' according to the arrest report.

When a Seminole County deputy arrived, he found the dog crammed under the couch with its head at an odd angle, investigators said.

The deputy also found fresh blood on a sofa cushion before Henry was taken into custody that night.

A few weeks later, Henry underwent a mental evaluation but was found to be competent to stand trial, according to court records.

The animal cruelty incident is not Henry's first run-in with the law as he previously was arrested on cocaine charges in 2003 and 2009.

  1. Good that this guy is behind bars and rightfully so. But how about people whose dogs kill family members, neighbors, friends or other people's pets and then callously defend the actions of their dog?

    1. Agreed, those people should be held accountable for the actions of their pets and get jail time as well.
