Brevard County sheriff's deputies were called to 7815 SE Babcock St. after a concerned citizen asked to check out the well-being of residents of the home, who hadn't been seen in weeks, according to a press release.
When deputies arrived, they found two dogs, one described as "dangerously emaciated and visibly malnourished," police say. Photos show the ribs and hipbones horrifyingly protruding beneath the tan and gray fur of the dogs.
Another photo shows the property, scattered in garbage and other filth.
The sheriff's office is investigating after determining the house was abandoned, and the dogs were left alone, in "deplorable" conditions without food. Water was limited, left in rusted, dirty containers, the release states.
The two dogs are about a year old and were taken to the BCSO Animal Care Center for immediate emergency treatment. Officials believe both dogs will survive.
Now, the focus is on finding who owns the two pooches.
"I am disgusted at how anyone can treat pets in this manner," Sheriff Wayne Ivey said in a statement. "To leave any animal in these conditions without the ability survive is not only cruel, but unforgivable.
"With the amount of loving citizens and resources available in Brevard County to help, there is NO reason this should ever happen.
"I am extremely confident that between members of my team and the State Attorney’s Office, we will identify, locate, arrest, and prosecute the monsters responsible."
Once they've recovered, the dogs will be available for adoption, Ivey said.
