Indiana: Nearly 100 hoarded, neglected animals seized from Troll Keep Kitty Haven animal rescue run by Bonnie Hanning, 62, and her two daughters Shannon Childress, 28, and Lorene Childress, 23.

INDIANA -- The Parke-Vermillion Humane Society is asking citizens for help after removing dozens of cats, birds and 10 dogs from a home deemed as an extreme hoarding situation by county officials.

According to information from Vermillion County Sheriff Mike Phelps, officers responded Oct. 12 to calls from concerned pet owners regarding the Troll Keep Kitty Haven animal rescue in Dana.

Callers said they had adopted kittens from the facility that had since experienced severe health issues, according to Phelps.

Deputy Chad Akers went to the residence and attempted contact the owners of the rescue, identified as Bonnie Hanning, 62, and her two daughters: Shannon Childress, 28, and Lorene Childress, 23.

  

  

"While at the property Deputy Akers observed evidence of several animals running astray in two modular homes and an extreme hoarding situation," Phelps said in a Tuesday press release.

On Oct. 13, Akers filled for a search warrant on the residence and buildings that was approved by the Vermillion County Circuit Court.

"Vermillion County Deputies Mike Strader, Sean Stafford and Chad Akers, along with the Parke-Vermillion Humane Society, the Vermillion County health inspector and area/zoning officer went to the residence to serve the search warrant," the release said. "Once the deputies secured the property, it was found that the living and animal conditions were very poor."

The local humane society removed 56 cats, 10 dogs and 26 birds from two modular homes, deemed unfit for human habitation by the health inspector due to the hoarding situation and unsanitary conditions.

Information on the case has since been filed with the Vermillion County prosecutor's office, and no arrests have been made as of Tuesday.

 

The humane society asks citizens for help, including monetary donations. It can be reached at (765) 492-3540, and is located behind the Vermillion County Jail at 1884 Indiana Route 63, Hillsdale, Ind. The facility is open 1-5 p.m. EDT Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
