NEW ZEALAND -- The Invercargill owner of a rottweiler dog which attacked a woman and her poodle has admitted two criminal charges relating to the incident.
Isabel Poupouare, 50, pleaded guilty in the Invercargill District Court on Monday to charges of owning a dog that attacked a person and owning a dog that attacked another dog on June 30.
The poodle that was attacked died of its injuries and the woman who was attacked suffered five puncture wounds to her hand which required hospital treatment.
An Invercargill City Council summary of facts says the victim was walking her poodle cross called Oscar along Ritchie St/St Andrew St when a rottweiler called JJ jumped over a gate and attacked them both.
"Oscar was bitten and lifted by the back/pelvic area and shaken like a rag doll," the summary says.
Oscar's owner was bitten on her hand as she attempted to rescue Oscar.
A teenage girl then managed to get the rottweiler back to its yard but the victim, who was on the ground, saw it come back over the gate and it once again attacked Oscar.
"The victim could not see what was happening but could hear little Oscar screaming [as he was mauled to death by the Rottweiler]," the summary says.
Eventually the Rottweiler was pulled off Oscar but Oscar died of his injuries.
Poupouare had not seen the attack but had expressed concern for both the victim and her dog and had offered to pay Oscar's vet bills, the summary says.
Appearing before Judge Mark Callaghan on Monday, she was remanded for a restorative justice meeting with the victim and will appear back before the courts for sentence on November 8.
The Rottweiler, which had been locked in the city's dog pound since the attack, was due to be destroyed on Monday afternoon.
Any words of sympathy for the Poodle owner who was bitten or her beloved dog, which was "screaming" while it was being mauled to death? Of course not.
