West Virginia: Charles Gillispie, 63, put his little dog inside a cage and then shot it in the face, killing it because it chewed up his dentures, police say

WEST VIRGINIA -- A St. Albans man is charged after he said he shot his dog because it chewed up his expensive dentures, court records said.

Charles Dwain Gillispie, 63, was charged with animal cruelty after a deputy said Gillispie told him on the telephone he had shot the pet, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

When the deputy arrived, he found a small, white dog laying in a cage on the front porch. He said the dog had two small, round wounds on the left side of its face, and the animal was not breathing and showed no signs of life.

The deputy said he spoke with Gillispie, who was inside the residence, and Gillispie said the dog was annoying and frequently chewed up his stuff.

When asked about the wounds on the dog’s face, Gillispie said he shot the dog while it was in the cage for chewing up his dentures, the deputy said.

Gillispie is currently being held at South Central Regional Jail on a $25,000 property/surety bond.
