Georgia: Despite best efforts, Zoey couldn't survive dog attack

GEORGIA -- As most know, Zoey was attacked by a dog recently which left her in critical condition and barely hanging on to life.

I'm very happy to say Zoey is a very tough cookie and it looks like she will recover. Unfortunately, her road to recovery will be long and will come with extensive vet bills to cover the cost of her care.

Tom and Mary realize restitution for Zoey's care is highly unlikely, but will do everything possible to have their Zoey back. I have been asked by neighbors and friends what can be done to help this sweet couple that we have all gotten to know and love. I thought if anyone wanted to do something for them, donations to help cover even a fraction of the bills that will come their way would be more than helpful.

If you are unable, please just keep the love and prayers coming because those are needed as well.

Update by Mary Welzenbach:
Today is the first day I have felt composed enough to write something or to talk about Zoey. She is doing so much better than the vet thought. First we were told she probably would not make it, second day they gave her a 50/50 chance, third day they said 80/20. She has steadily improved each day, today she walked a little on her three good legs.

The right leg nerves have been totally severed and vet is saying the leg should be amputated. Her wounds are still very severe and they are treating them with a laser. cant stitch them up too many and they want them to bleed out, concern is infection.

But we are so very pleased at her progress so far. Now we want to address the outpouring of thoughts, prayers and donations from our neighbors, friends and family. I don't know how I can ever thank you all.

The Dunn's our next door neighbors and adopted family have blessed our life so much just by becoming part of our family. It was their idea for the gofundme page and when I saw it I couldn't believe how many of you wonderful people came to our rescue. I know this is a bad time of year and yet you still donated. We want to thank you all personally, we can do that with our family but for those of you who gave because of their loving hearts we will address each of you personally as soon as things are a little better.

Thank you, thank you again and again.
With all Our Love Tom and Mary

Update Posted by Nicole Dunn:
Poor Mary is overwhelmed by the love shown. She is in tears from the support and generosity of their friends and family. Thank you all so much.

I wanted to give everyone an update. Zoey is still very weak, but stable. She still isn't eating. I think the goal right now is to get her eating and possibly going to potty on her own. She is on an IV and doctors are having to drain her bladder for her. There has also been discussion of her leg having to be amputated, but we are holding on to hope that that won't have to be done. This poor baby has been a champion and has a will to survive for sure. So let's keep those prayers coming!

Update Posted by Nicole Dunn:
Zoey had a good day today. She walked a little outside using her 3 good legs, but she was still able to get around. She went potty outside which is a huge accomplishment. She still isn't eating on her own, but we only expect baby steps. Walking was a big victory! Mary said she looked really good today so we will take it.

Mary has been really busy therefore very exhausted. So I've been trying to do updates for everyone. She said she needs to call so many people, but I told her don't worry about it right now and that I would keep everyone posted. So if you haven't heard from her, she will get in touch when things settle down. She again is very grateful for the love and support.

Update Posted by Nicole Dunn:
Unfortunately Zoey took a turn for the worse today. I will update as soon as I know more.

Update Posted by Nicole Dunn:
I'm very sorry to say that Zoey has passed. Please keep Mary and Tom in your prayers.
