Ohio: John Nelson III, 43, charged with felony animal cruelty after starving his Pit bull Lab mix

OHIO -- The Washington County Sheriff’s Office released the following report December 20:

On 14 Dec 2016 Sgt. McGilton, Washington County Dog Warden, requested a summons for John Clark Nelson III, age 43, 2396 Woodruff Road, Vincent, on a fifth degree felony charge of cruelty to a companion animal.

The Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous letter requesting a check be made at the Nelson residence regarding the black Lab mix owned by Nelson. The author of the letter related that the dog’s ribs were showing and it had sores on its body and was limping.

Sgt. McGilton proceeded to that location and observed a black Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull mix breed dog chained to a tree at the side of this residence. The dog did have a dog house, however no food or water was observed.

The dog appeared extremely emaciated with it ribs, backbone, hip bones and even its skull protruding, as well as other areas of concern.

Contact with Nelson was attempted at the residence meeting with negative results. The dog was seized from the property and a notice was posted advising of the seizure and a court date set for a bond hearing.

The dog was taken for medical care and for an assessment. It was found the dog was 10 to 15 pounds underweight, infected with whipworms, fleas, infections, and its teeth ground to the gums/nerves.

John Clark Nelson III made contact with Sgt. McGilton and advised he noticed the dog started losing weight about seven days earlier. Nelson was advised of all the medical issues that were discovered when the dog was seen by a Veterinarian.

Nelson was given several opportunities to explain the conditions for the dog, however, he changed his story while speaking with Sgt. McGilton. Nelson was advised he was going to be charged with cruelty to a companion animal. Nelson stated he would be willing to surrender the dog.

This case is pending in Marietta Municipal Court.
