United Kingdom: Five-year-old mauled by relative's dog

UNITED KINGDOM -- A five-year-old girl suffered multiple injuries after she was attacked by a family dog in Norris Green .

Police were called to reports that a dog had attacked the child while she was staying at a relative’s house on Wellesbourne Place at 7:05pm on Friday night.

She suffered injuries to the head, neck and hand and was taken to Alder Hey Hospital shortly after where she will require surgery.

Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Officers arrested a 24-year-old man from Norris Green on suspicion of having a dog out of control, also on Friday night.

He has since been released pending a disposal decision while the investigation continues.

The dog sustained serious injuries from the family trying to restrain it and was taken to a vets where it was then put down as a result.

The dog is believed to have belonged to a relative of the girl and was not a prohibited breed. -- American Pit Bull Terriers are not a prohibited breed in the UK. My guess is that the dog is either a pit bull, mastiff, german shepherd or akita.
