NEW YORK -- A pit bull was shot and killed by police after they say the dog broke free from its cage and charged at two NYPD detectives while they were arresting a suspect Friday in the Bronx.
The incident happened at 881 East 162nd St. around 1:30 a.m. in Morrisiania.
Police say two detectives were arresting a suspect inside an apartment when one of two caged dogs broke free, became aggressive and charged at the two officers. Both of the detectives fired their guns, and one bullet struck and killed the dog, police say.
The officers were transported to the hospital for evaluation.
One person was arrested at the scene.
Police did not say what charges they are facing.
