FLORIDA -- A man was arrested early Thursday after he was seen beating and kicking his dog inside a Westside apartment, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.
Barry James Egan Jr., 35, is charged with animal cruelty.
Police responded just after 1 a.m. to the Canterbury Gardens Apartments on Lane Avenue South about a domestic call.
But when they arrived, police heard someone say, "He is beating the s*** out of that dog. Officer, please stop him," the arrest report said.
Through a window, police said, they saw Egan kicking the "small breed brown dog" four to five times up against the kitchen wall.
One officer noted that he could hear the dog cry and yelp in pain as he was being kicked, according to the arrest report.
When the police knocked on the door, Egan refused officers' commands to get on the ground but was eventually taken into custody after a short struggle, investigators said.
Police tried to get the dog, which appeared to be very afraid, but the dog escaped the apartment during the investigation and has not been found.
Egan also faces charges of resisting arrest and marijuana possession. He was booked into the Duval County Jail and ordered held on $24,000 bond.
Anyone who sees the dog is asked to call Jacksonville’s Animal Care and Protective Services at 904-630-2489.
The reporter went and knocked on Egan's apartment, but there was no answer (or he refused to respond).
