Michigan: Grandmother tries to save kids, dog mauls all 3

MICHIGAN -- A two-year-old suffered severe head trauma and another child and the children's grandmother were injured when a dog attacked all three of them in their own yard Sunday evening.

At 5:41 p.m. April 9 Cass County Sheriff's deputies responded to the 63000 block of Crooked Creek in Calvin Township to a report of a dog mauling multiple people, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

They found Jennifer Hansford, 44, of Cassopolis, was trying to save two children, ages 2 and 7, who were being attacked by a dog.

Deputies caught the dog, and Hansford and the older child were transported by EMS to Niles Lakeland Hospital to be treated for their injuries.

The younger child was airlifted by Medlife to South Bend Memorial Hospital, then later transported to Riley's Children's Hospital for treatment of severe head trauma, authorities said.

The child's condition Monday morning was not immediately available.
