Indiana: Three-year-old boy hospitalized with 200 stitches, nerve damage after being attacked by relative's Pit Bull, which had history of attacking

INDIANA --  A 3-year-old boy is in the hospital recovering after being attacked by a relative's Pit Bull.

The attack happened Sunday at a home on the east side of Indianapolis.

Elias Hearn, 3, underwent surgery on Thursday for injures to his neck and face. According to Elias’ mother, Stephanie Schofield, the injuries required more than 200 stitches. She said her son has nerve damage, can’t eat or drink, and has lost mobility on the right side of his face.

His mother said he will likely need additional surgeries.

It’s still unclear exactly how the dog attack happened, but according to an Indianapolis Animal Care and Control spokesperson, the child was at a family gathering and playing outside when the dog attacked him and wouldn’t let go.

He said several people worked to pull the Pit Bull away before police arrived. The 3-year-old was rushed to the hospital.

“It is kind of indescribable. It’s like a nightmare you just can’t wake up from and get the images out of your head, and you have to keep praying that your son can find some relief and that he is going to heal properly, and we can limit the amount of surgeries he is going to have,” said Schofield.

An Indianapolis Animal Care Services spokesperson said the Pit Bull was voluntarily surrendered by its owner and put down. He tells us the female owner was somehow related to the child. No citations were issued in this case.

The boy’s mom said she wanted to share her story because she doesn’t want anyone else to have to go through what her family is dealing with.

Schofield said she has two other children, and friends and family have stepped up to help.

A GoFundMe account has been created to help with expenses because she said she can’t work anymore and is spending her time at the hospital.

*update* he was not able to move his mouth or tongue still so a feeding tube was placed. Everyone knows my baby just loves his food and snacks and he saw a chocolate milk on the desk and is so frustrated he can't have anything which is breaking my heart because he can't even open his mouth to cry. He is making progress though so thank you for all of the prayers and please continue to.

Please anyone who owns a dog especially a pit bull, make sure you are a responsible pet owner and if the dog has a history of attacking which this dog had, it's obviously not a good ideal to let him outside without a fenced in yard where children are playing regardless if you see them or not but are well aware they are there. I do not believe all pit bulls are horrible, our dog actually is a pit boxer mix, it's the owner that needs to ensure they are capable of taking care of the type of breed they decide to keep

They just took the bandages off and he will most likely need additional surgeries. All we can do is pray for a miracle at this point. This is the worst thing a parent can feel to see their child in so much pain and unable to do anything to take it away. We need prayers please share 😭

*Baby Elias Update* he is resting and has been out of surgery, it just took me a minute to regain my composure to post an update but surgery went well, they had to remove pretty much the entire area that looked black in the previous pictures because it was dead tissue so now it is all taken out but an open wound we will need to let heal on its own so he can grow his own skin back hopefully. If it does not progress as expected he will need a skin graph so praying he can heal on his own. We already know he will need several more surgeries to gain back the mobility on his right side possibly a nerve replacement they will take from another area like his calf and several more once his wounds heal for the scar revision process. Please just keep us in your prayers

My grandson was attacked over Memorial Day weekend by a Cane Corso Mastiff. He too had been aggressive before but wasn't aware of it. My grandson is 3 also. I know what your going through. It ripped his scalp off. Everyone at the cookout was traumatized. God Bless you all. Sharing for help and prayers.
