Nebraska: Eric Rees facing 10 counts of animal cruelty after dozens of dead and dying horses seized

NEBRASKA -- An update on a heartbreaking story first reported by WOWT6 News.

Another horse has died after being rescued from private property in Seward County, Nebraska. WOWT6 News learned that charges have been filed.

Mike McKnight was there last Sunday as 27 malnourished horses arrived at an undisclosed rescue stable. The herd came from wooded land that offered little to eat but weeds. Many of the rescued horses were up to 200 pounds underweight.

The carcass of one yearling was found on the property and another horse died this week according to the Seward County sheriff.

The county attorney tells WOWT6 News that the horses belong to Eric Rees of Garland, Nebraska.

Seward county attorney Wendy Elston said that Rees faces 10 counts of animal cruelty. Two felonies because of the dead horses and eight misdemeanors based on conditions of other horses.

Also a civil action has been filed to determine if the horses can be kept in foster care and eventually adopted or should be returned to the owner.

Our attempt to reach the horse owner has not been successful.
