New Hampshire: Golden retriever 'was abandoned and left to die', says police chief

NEW HAMPSHIRE -- Police are asking for the public’s help to find a man and woman who abandoned a badly neglected dog at the back door of a local animal shelter.

The dog, an adult female golden retriever, had to be euthanized after a veterinarian found “extensive medical issues” stemming from neglect over a long period of time, police said.

Employees at the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire said the dog was 10 to 12 years old.

“This is an extremely disturbing case where an innocent animal was abandoned and left to die,” Police Chief John Bryfonski said Thursday.

“We are encouraging anyone with information about this incident or who may have seen something to give us a call right away,” he said.

Police responded to a request for help at the Animal Rescue League headquarters on Route 101 at 8:32 a.m. Monday.

A shelter employee told police after reporting for work that a worker found the dog lying in the mulch near the building’s back door.

Video surveillance images revealed a woman and a man in a four-door, blue sedan abandoned the dog around 7 p.m. on Sunday.

The shelter closes at 5 p.m. on Sundays, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Bedford Police Department at 603-472-5113.
