New Jersey : Steven Rivera, 28, and Diana Rodriguez, 33, abandoned their two Pit Bulls inside a kennel less than 100 feet from the animal shelter. Both dogs cooked to death inside this kennel.

NEW JERSEY -- A New Jersey couple was arrested for leaving two pit bills to die in the heat in front near the North Shore Animal League, authorities announced Thursday.

Steven Rivera, 28, and Diana Rodriguez, 33, both from Jersey City, N.J., were charged with abandoning and torturing the dogs, Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said.

The dogs, King and Becki, were discovered inside a crate by two staffers of a nearby propane business on July 31 at 5 p.m.

The 3-year-old Pit Bulls had been trapped in the crates for an hour, according to the criminal complaint.

Authorities believe the canines died after temperatures rose to 88 degrees on that day. They basically cooked to death, say prosecutors.

Jed Painter, the chief of Nassau's Animal Crimes Unit, says they may not have intended to kill the dogs, but they are still responsible.

"While we have safe haven laws for children and babies, we don't have any for animals," says Painter. "The message is you really have to be responsible."

They pleaded not guilty, posted $125 bail each and were allowed to walk right out of the courtroom.

$125? That's it? For killing two dog? Those dogs suffered horrible deaths, basically being cooked alive, and they get $125 bail. Disgusting.

"(Rivera) intends to vigorously fight the charges," his lawyer, Justin Bobko said. "A great deal of investigation still has to be done concerning the case. He certainly never intended to hurt either of the dogs."

A reasonable person would know the outcome of abandoning dogs locked inside
a kennel. A reasonable person would know the outcome of abandoning dogs locked inside a kennel without water. A reasonable person would know the outcome of abandoning dogs locked inside a kennel without water or food. A reasonable person would know that death by heat exhaustion, starvation and/or dehydration would occur. They knew what they were doing.

Rodriguez and her lawyer were not immediately available to comment.

The news clip says they're planning on moving to Florida so don't be surprised if they skip court and head on down, figuring they won't be extradited.
