The Citizen reports Butler’s application was denied, so police say he broke into the animal shelter and stole the puppy.
The little pup was found at Butler’s home in Union Springs a couple days later.
In October, Butler pleaded guilty to one count of burglary.
The 39-year-old was sentenced Thursday to serve two to four years in prison and will pay the SPCA 250-dollars in restitution.
