Brave Phoebe recovering well after being mauled in dog attack

UNITED KINGDOM -- The schoolgirl mauled by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier- type dog is making a good recovery from her injuries.

As reported, Phoebe Meredith, 7, was attacked while she played in her friend's garden on April 17 and needed four-and-a-half hours of surgery to treat her injuries.

She suffered seven cuts to the head which exposed her skull and left a hole in her cheek, and had part of her eyelid chewed away by the dog, which was put down with the owner's agreement.

Her step-mum Claire Pedersen told the Telegraph Phoebe should have all of her stitches out within about 12 weeks.

She is due to go back to Hull Royal Infirmary in two weeks for a check-up on her eye.

Claire, 30, said: "Phoebe is doing really well. She's had the stitches in her ear and cheek taken out. It's just the ones in her hand and her head left.

"Fingers crossed she won't have any permanent scars, but the doctors have said if there is anything major she can go for a skin graft. Luckily, with her being so young, she will heal quite quickly.

"She's back at school. She said her hand, which is her writing hand, was hurting so we'll just have to keep an eye on that."

Claire said Phoebe, who was quiet and withdrawn after the attack, was getting back to her usual bubbly self. However, she is still wary of dogs.

"She's more or less returned to normal, but she has been in close contact with a couple of dogs and she has run a mile the other way. Psychologically, it is still frightening for her.

"She's dubious about going out. She's more apprehensive than she was before. It might take a while, but she'll get there. She's a resilient little girl."

The brave St Peter's Avenue C of E Primary School pupil returned to the playground earlier this week where she has been inundated with gifts from concerned classmates – including teddy bears, chocolates and even a muddy football wrapped up in a ribbon.

She said: "My teachers made me a big card and I have been given about ten teddies as well. I have been really spoilt. A little boy even came round to give me his football.

"It hurt a lot at the time, but not so much any more. My hand still hurts a little bit when I play on my Wii, but I am nearly back to normal. I don't really like dogs anymore though."
