South Carolina: Pit bull Attack Leaves Toddler In Serious Condition

SOUTH CAROLINA -- A two-year-old is in the hospital after being attacked by a neighbor's pit bull.

The incident took place Sunday night on Carroll Drive in Sumter. Police say the child was left unsupervised and wandered next door, where he was attacked. The child now is recovering at Palmetto Health Richland and remains in serious but stable condition.

The owner of the pit bull said she never imagined something like this would have happened.

"The dog was chained up back here," said Krystal Tention, who was just about to go to sleep when her neighbor's son was attacked by her pit bull named "Big Dog."

"Just thinking about him back here all helpless not able to scream or nothing and my room being right there and me not hearing anything and come out here and try and help him," said Tention.

When police arrived, the boys father was carrying the two year old, screaming that he had been attacked.

Neighbors in the area say the boy had lost both ears and most of his scalp.

"I just saw a lot of blood on his face and he didn't really have any more hair and that's when I broke down," said Tention.

"Adult pit bulls are very large, very strong dogs," Sumter Deputy Chief Russell Roark said. At this point, Roark is not certain if the neighbors will face criminal charges.

"These dogs were not running wild, they were in a fenced in area," Roark said. "We are still trying to find out how the child got access to the property, that's something we will continue to investigate."

"When my boyfriend came back here, the baby's bike was under this window," says Tention.

Animal Control ended up taking two pit bulls from Tentions home. Tention apologized to the boy's family.

"I'm sorry this had to happen, I never imagined something like this would happen and my heart just goes out to them," said Tention.

News 19 spoke to the mother of the boy by phone. While she understandably didn't want to do an interview, we did ask her what is next for her family. She said she just wants her baby boy to survive.
