Trial in Bay City pit bull attack case to begin Tuesday

Harry R. McDaniel
BAY CITY, MI — Jury selection is to begin Tuesday afternoon in the case against a man accused of harboring a dangerous pit bull.

Harry R. McDaniel, 64, was charged with single counts of owning a dangerous animal causing injury, a four-year felony, after his dog, Big Boy, attacked an 8-year-old boy Jan. 4.

The youngster, Cameron P. Everett, told authorities he was walking in the 300 block of Jennison Street when he slipped on the ice. McDaniel was walking the dog nearby.

When McDaniel also fell on the ice, Big Boy broke from his leash and attacked the child, leaving a wound that required 100 stitches and surgery to repair.

The child testified that McDaniel helped him fight off the dog. McDaniel then isolated the animal and called Bay County Animal Control to ask that it be destroyed.

Bay City attorney Edward M. Czuprynski, who is defending McDaniel, said he expects the trial to proceed quickly.

Circuit Judge Harry P. Gill will preside over the trial.
