HARFORD COUNTY, MARYLAND -- A woman who was riding along a trail at the Deer Creek Preservation Area in Street was knocked off her horse after it was attacked by a pit bull early last week.
The attack was the second in this month in Harford County involving a pit bull and other animals.
The woman, 35, of the 300 block of East Jarrettsville Road in Forest Hill, told police she and a friend, were riding their horses in the Deer Creek trail around 6 p.m. May 15 when they saw two men and a young girl, who had two pit bull terriers with them, walking toward them from the opposite direction.
The horseback riders said they turned their horses around and tried to leave the trail, according to a Harford County sheriff’s deputy’s report, when the dogs came near the horses.
One of the women told police she pulled out an air gun and pulled the trigger several times and yelled at the dogs to try and scare them off.
One of the dogs was under the legs of one of the horses, trying to bite its legs. The woman said her horse went under a low branch and she was knocked off.
The woman who fell was taken to Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore by an ambulance from the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company.
PIT BULL OWNERS FLED WITH THEIR MAULERS
The people with the dogs came off the trail, got into an older white or light gray Chrysler or Oldsmobile and left.
The horses were returned to their stables, and police said one had bite marks on its front legs.
The case was referred to animal control for investigation.
On May 12, sheriff’s deputies were called to a neighborhood in Fallston where a pit bull had attacked two smaller dogs.
According to the police report of the incident, the owner was not home at the time of the attacks and told investigators she was not aware the dog had gotten loose.
