Boy wounded in dog attack

OMAHA, NE -- A 12-year-old boy suffered serious bite wounds to his legs Sunday night when a dog broke its chain and attacked the boy near 30th and Seward Streets, a Nebraska Humane Society official said.

Paramedics did not consider the boy's injuries life-threatening en route to Creighton University Medical Center. His identity and condition at the hospital were not immediately available.

The attack occurred about 9 p.m. Sunday. The boy was walking in front of a house at 2919 Seward St., where the dog, described as a Rottweiler mix, had been chained in the front yard. The dog's owner was visiting there and had the dog chained in the front yard, said Mark Langan, vice president of field operations for the Nebraska Humane Society.

The dog owner, a 38-year-old Omaha man, Oscar Gutierrez, was ticketed on suspicion of improperly restraining an animal and having a menacing dog, Langan said.

The Humane Society confiscated the dog, which is considered dangerous, and will not release the animal until court hearings, he said.

[NOTE: Thank God someone has taken the lead and done the responsible thing - seizing the dog and having it declared dangerous instead of issuing the same old 'running loose' tickets. Good job NHS!]
