BENNINGTON, NE - A vicious dog attacks a woman who's known for her kindness to strays. A guy just driving by on North 156th Street, heading to the grocery store in Bennington stops, then starts swinging.
The dog is locked up after witnesses say it tore into the legs, stomach and arms of Marci Gilbert, the owner of Gilbert Kennels.
"I looked over my shoulder because I was driving and I saw her on the ground and see her wrestling with the dog on the ground and then realized, oh my god, the dog's attacking her," said good samaritan Sean Vorel.
27-year-old Sean Vorel pulled over, jumped the kennel's fence and tried using a board to get the dog off the woman.
"Kind of shimmied up the side of her house and got in there with it (the dog) and started hitting it and it just kept attacking her and wouldn't stop. So relentless," said Vorel.
The good samaritan says Gilbert looked exhausted from trying to fight off the dog and just laid frozen on the ground until help arrived.
"She holds strays for Bennington Police and we actually worked with her to find the dog's owner but at this point we don't know who the owner is," said Vice President of Field Operations for the Nebraska Humane Society, Mark Langan.
Marci Gilbert has been taking care of the dog for two weeks now. "At one point it (the dog) was right next to me. I almost had him in the kennel. I tried to shut the gate but the dog ran back out and attacked her again," said Vorel.
Douglas County Sheriff's deputies arrived and used a taser on the Pit Bull. Sean Vorel worries about the woman.
"Hope she's all right. That's all I care about," said Vorel.
Marci Gilbert is expected to be ok. The dog has been taken to the Nebraska Humane Society.
