Pit bulls enter doggy door, attack Border Collie mix

Las Vegas, NV -- A local woman is worried her dog is in serious danger. She claims two neighborhood pit bulls are out to get him and says she has the photos to prove it.

Her pet border collie, 'Buddy', is now recovering from wounds to his neck and stomach.

Las Vegas Animal Control is investigating claims that those pit bulls got into the woman's home and went on the attack.

Debbi Burkes claims the two pit bulls squeezed through her back doggy door and got into her home near Washington and Jones. She says the dogs proceeded to maul her beloved pet in her laundry room.

"They're still saying my dogs are not to blame. Well whose dogs are? I have pictures," said Debbi Burkes, who says she wants to make sure this doesn't happen again.

One of the photos taken by Burkes' roommate, shows one of the pit bulls apparently sinking its teeth into Buddy. Another photo, shows both pit bulls inside the home.

The timeline on the camera at five minutes later shows splattered blood and patches of black fur scattered around the room.

Burkes says her roommate repeatedly hit the pit bulls with an object to drive them out of the home.

"I don't know, am I going to be attacked today, tomorrow or the next day?," asked Burkes. "I want them to take responsibility of their dogs, and if they do something they better well stand behind it."

Burkes has vet records that show a bill of nearly $300 to mend Buddy's wounds, which she knows is small price for keeping her animal intact.

"I've already had to put one dog down. I don't want to have to put him down because he's my baby," cried Burkes.

Las Vegas Animal Control says when officers responded to the home next door, the owner and two pit bulls could not be found.

When confronted on Wednesday, the owner stepped outside to explain on camera.

"I can guarantee you right now, you can come in here and they will jump on you to play with you, not attack you. I will stake my life on it," said Edmund Darco, who insists his two pit bulls are playful not aggressive.

Edmund Darco displayed one of the pit bulls who seemed more timid than anything.

Darco says his dogs were actually defending their territory, claiming it was Buddy who first came into his yard.

He explained his belief that the pit bulls then chased Buddy back into the home next door.

"They would've never got into that house if his front gate wasn't open and his front door wasn't open," claimed Darco. "They probably want to see our dogs gone. I don't see it. Accidents happen with animals."

Las Vegas Animal Control says possible charges and citations against the owner of the pit bulls include: two counts of dogs running at large, two counts of no pet licenses, two counts of not having rabies vaccinations and two spay and neuter violations.

Animal Control is declining to comment any further citing an ongoing investigation.
