Dog owner’s terror at ferocious attack

UNITED KINGDOM -- A distraught pensioner today told how her pet was mauled by two pit bull terriers.

Susan Monk, 64, from Westfield Drive, Leyland, was out shopping in Chorley earlier this month when she claims two “ferocious” pit bull type dogs attacked her pet Labrador Charlie, while he was on a lead.

The pensioner, who is recovering from a stroke, said she was left terrified by the attack, which left her pet needing emergency treatment for a gash on his ear.

She also claims the owner of the two dogs, which were not on leads, hurled abuse at her and her elderly husband Kenneth, 64.

She claims she and an onlooker phoned 999 immediately but were told to report the incident to Chorley Council’s dog wardens.

But she claims her attempts to report it have not been acted upon properly despite numerous calls.

“There was blood everywhere,” she said.

“These two dogs came out of nowhere and ripped into my dog as we were walking in the town centre.

“People came rushing out of a shop nearby to see if we were ok. My husband managed to pull our dog away, but he was badly injured.

“I reported it to the dog wardens and I’ve rung them back on numerous occasions but I’ve not heard a thing.
“Nothing at all has been done and nobody has come out to see us.

“I think it is appalling.

“We are supposed to be really cracking down on dangerous dogs.

“What would have happened if this was a child?

“These dogs need to be off the streets.”

The incident happened on Cleveland Street in Chorley on June 3.

A spokesman for Chorley Council’s dog control department, which has responsibility for dog attacks, say officers attempted to contact Mrs Monk on numerous occasions.

Coun Eric Bell, who oversees dog control at Chorley Council, said: “From the initial report we received this sounded like a serious attack which must have been upsetting for the dog owners.

“We have tried to contact the dog owners numerous times since the incident but we have been unable to speak to them, as there was no answer and the number that we have been given does not have a voicemail.

“We have started investigating but it is important that the owners get in contact with us as soon as possible.

“We will take action against people who don’t look after their pets and keep them under control and people can report such incidents to Chorley Council on 01257 515151.”
