GARY, IN — A pit bull attacked a Glen Park woman as she walked her dog Sunday night, police said.
“It was like being eaten alive. It was just so sudden and vicious,” Carolyn Palo, 58, told the Post-Tribune on Monday.
Palo was walking her dog on Lincoln Street, just a few blocks north of where she lives, when the attacking dog rushed at her and tried to attack her dog, the police report states.
She tried to separate the animals when the pit bull turned on her, grabbing her left arm and causing a large puncture wound.
“I need to see a specialist. The pain is awful,” Palo said.
Her dog is a rescued pet trained to alert humans if someone is having a heart attack, she said.
The owner of the 3-year-old black-and-brown pit bull surrendered the pet to Animal Control authorities later that night, a spokesman said.
After the required 10-day quarantine period, the dog likely will be destroyed, he added.
Palo said she grew up in Glen Park and often walked her dog without incident.
“It was very unfortunate,” she said.
