FLORIDA -- Residents of one South Florida neighborhood are outraged after one homeowner's dog went on a savage attack and nearly killed another pet.
Lee Schroeder said his yellow Labrador, Rocky, was attacked on Wednesday evening by what is believed to be a pit bull mix, who jumped over the fence of his South Miami-Dade home and wrapped his jaws around Rocky's neck. "From his neck all the way down to his chest, it was just gaping wounds," Schroeder said.
"The only way that we were able to pry the pit off their Lab was to put the two dogs in between the two fences," said neighbor Mark Cerrano, who helped separate the animals during Wednesday's incident.
Rocky underwent surgery for his injuries. However, days after the attack, the Labrador is still recovering.
Schroeder believes his neighbors are scared of the dog who attacked Rocky, and residents in the area want the dog removed from the neighborhood.
According to Cerrano, the dog that attacked Rocky has killed other animals in the neighborhood. "There's a right way and a wrong way to keep a dog," said Cerrano, "and that dog shouldn't be here."
After they received several complaints, Miami-Dade Animal Services responded to the neighborhood to determine if the dog is indeed dangerous. According to Animal Services, the investigation will take quite some time.

Meanwhile, Schroeder continues to monitor Rocky as he begins his long road to recovery. "[He's] been with us since a puppy, 10 years. He's family," Schroeder said.
Miami-Dade County has an ordinance, which prohibits 'purebred pit bulls' from living in the county, but certain pit bull mixes are allowed.
The owner of the dog accused of attacking Rocky did not comment on the matter.
