Owner of Pit Bulls in Tuesday's attack located

SAVANNAH, GA -- A Savannah woman told police two pit bull dogs who attacked children playing in a park Tuesday night had escaped from her vehicle.

The woman voluntarily went to Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police headquarters Friday morning to tell detectives how the two family pets escaped from their vehicle when a child in the car with them opened a door. The dogs were being transported to a relative’s house nearby for safekeeping while the family moved. They do not live in the neighborhood.

The woman and a child with her tried to locate the dogs, heard gunshots and left in fear.

Detectives continue to investigate the incident and how it developed.

The two pit bulls ran to nearby Treat Park at Treat Avenue and Gabel Street and attacked children playing there. Javon Roberson, 7, remains in critical condition at Memorial University Medical Center after the 8 p.m. incident.

Bystanders beat the smaller of the two dogs unconscious with bricks to get her to release her hold on the child’s face. The other dog went after other children on the sliding board until neighbors chased it away by hitting it with bricks and firing a gun at it.

The smaller pit bull was euthanized by SCMPD Animal Control, which captured the larger dog Wednesday morning and is observing it for 10 days.
