FAYETTE COUNTY, PA -- Police in Fayette County shot a pit bull when they could not stop it from attacking another dog that was tied outdoors.
In a report, Uniontown police said the pit bull escaped its home at 115 S. Grant St. at 12:49 p.m. Sunday. It went to Farragut Street, where police said a man had to jump into a pickup truck to avoid being attacked.
The pit bull then gained access to its own backyard at 115 S. Grant St. through a hole in a fence and attacked the chained mixed-breed collie.
Police threw bricks at the pit bull in a failed attempt to stop the attack. They could not use a Taser on the pitbull, according to the report, because the dog was out of range of the device.
Fearing the collie would be killed, an officer shot the pit bull twice in its shoulders before the animal retreated to its back porch and lay down.
Police said the pit bull's owner, Kelly Knopsnider, 33, agreed to sign over the dog to the Fayette Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to be euthanized.
