Dip Aujla, aged 53, of Spinney Hill, was walking his family’s prized Yorkshire Terrier Jack in Bradlaugh Fields at about 5.30am on Wednesday when the attack happened.

His wife Tina Bartosiak, aged 53, a midwife at Northampton General Hospital, said: “My husband was walking Jack as usual before work when suddenly, out of nowhere, two pit bulls headed straight for him. In a flash, before my husband could even do anything, one had picked Jack up in its mouth and was shaking him.
“Both my husband and the lady owner of the dogs tried to get the pit bull off him, but it had such a strong grip on him, and my husband was bitten on the hand.”
Jack was rushed to the vets, where x-rays of his tiny body found he had sustained three fractured spinal vertebrae and a punctured lung in addition to numerous bite marks. The extent of his injuries meant the family then had to make the painful decision to put him to sleep.
Mrs Bartosiak said: “As the day went on he was in so much pain. He couldn’t walk or stand up. We couldn’t leave him like that. We are distraught. He was such a lovely happy dog and he loved walks. We had had him since he was two and it was actually his 7th birthday the day he died.
“He was everything to us. He even came with us when we moved to America for a few years. Wherever we were, Jack was with us. He was part of the family.
“We just wish the owner could have been a bit more responsible. If only the dog had had a muzzle on it wouldn’t have been able to attack Jack. So many people walk their dogs in Bradlaugh Fields and they all knew Jack. We just want to make people aware these things can happen in a flash.”
