Deputy fatally shoots pit bull in Deerfield Beach

DEERFIELD BEACH, FL --  A Broward sheriff's deputy shot and killed a pit bull wandering the streets of Deerfield Beach after neighbors called 911 for help.

Operators received a 911 call about two aggressive dogs on the 600 block of Northwest First Way around 11:18 a.m., sheriff's spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said.

"When the deputy responded he said one of the dogs tried to bite him," she said. "That's when he discharged his service weapon."

Larry Williams witnessed the shooting.

"When I was on the way to the store I saw the police jump out of the car with a stick to try to catch him and he ran and they had to shoot one dog," Williams said.

The dog died on the street but it was unclear if there was a second dog, Coleman-Wright said.

Neighbors said the dog routinely roamed the streets and a boy had been bitten before.

"When they let him out to go to the bathroom he'd get away and then he'd be chasing after people," Williams said. "I'd go get the [owners] and they would come pick him up and take him back home."
