WISCONSIN -- Not-guilty pleas were entered on behalf of four suspects accused of various counts of animal mistreatment after the seizure of 46 dogs, mostly Great Danes, by authorities in May.

Melissa Harrel, 57; Allyson Williams, 24; Kathy Williams, 54; and Donovan Williams, 45, all of Brodhead, appeared Monday in Green County Court before Judge Thomas Vale, where they stood mute to charges against them.

Melissa Harrel, who appeared in court with her attorney, Sheila Kessler, was charged with one count of intentional mistreatment of animals and one count of intentionally providing improper animal shelter. A $1,000 signature bond was set in her case. A pre-trial conference is set for 8:30 a.m. Aug. 16.

All defendants share the same condition of bond—they are forbidden from owning, possessing, confining or caring for any dogs while residing at N4651 County F in Brodhead.

The Green County Humane Society now has ownership of 50 dogs, including 46 taken during execution of a search warrant at the house on County F on May 25, and 17 puppies born once the animals were in captivity.

It is costing the society more than $600 a day to care for all the dogs.
