Young boy recovering from pit bull attack

BEAUMONT, TX -- Dogs can be unpredictable even if they are your own. One family found that out when a pit pull attacked their great grandson.

7-year-old Kendall was around the dog just about every day. "He was eating. He passed by him and the dog just jumped on him," says the boys great grandfather Johnell Louis.

The pit bulldog, Deuce, attacked Kendall and bit him in the face. "He was hollering paw paw and I ran around the truck and saw the dog was on him so I went and got the dog off of him and he had a hole in his jaw. So I came and gave him to his grandmother and I went back out there and shot the dog."

Kendall was rushed to a hospital where plastic surgeons stitched up his face. The 7-year-old boy's mother was at work when she got the call that the pit bull had bitten her son. "I panicked. I didn't know what to do and tried to hold it together but it was not knowing what happened."

Johnell is glad he was nearby to save his great grandson. "Glad I was there because no telling what could have happened."

Kendall's mom adds, "I thank God. That dog could have easily if you look where his eye is. He could have lost his eye he has a gash. If it was an inch lower his eye would have been gone."

Kendall's mother hope their experience will serve as a reminder to others. "Be careful. You never know. They were around this dog all the time and for this to happen for the dog to do this to him. You just never know what a pit bull will do."

An unknown factor that could apply to most animals and the reason extra precautions are important when it comes to safeguarding children.

Kendall had one operation and relatives say the attack did not affect the vision in his right eye. He is expected to make a full recovery.
