PORTLAND, OR -- A family cat was recently mauled to death in a Southeast Portland neighborhood and now the animal’s owners are blaming two pit bulls for the attack.
The owners of the pit bulls, however, disagree and claim it was a raccoon that killed their neighbor’s cat.
Mike Weisberg and his wife Kate Foster said their cat Fang was killed in the middle of the day, which leads them to believe it wasn’t a raccoon that killed the animal.
The cat was found dead in the yard where the pit bulls live. They were not loose outside the yard at the time.
After seeing Fang’s body Weisberg and Foster are sure the dogs are behind the attack.
“I used to work as a vet tech and the back end of (the cat) was mauled, I mean it was horrible,” said Foster.
Jonas Wolfe, the father of the pit bulls’ owner, said his family feels awful about what happened, but insists the pit bulls aren’t responsible.
“Anytime I was on the porch it would run around the corner and jump on my lap,” he said about the cat.
The dog’s owner said she doesn’t plan to spend any more time figuring out what happened because she’s sure her dogs weren’t involved. She runs a website that advocates for the pit bull breed and works to find them good homes.
Animal control officers did come out to investigate, but only after Fang was buried. They said because the cat left its own yard there is nothing they can do except urge people to better control their pets.
