Greenville updates pit bull ordinances

GREENVILLE, MS -- It looks like Greenville pit bull owners will have to start keeping their pets on a shorter leash.

The Greenville City Council has approved changes to previous ordinances to toughen rules on how a pit bull is confined, registration of pit bulls, fines and impoundment fees.

Council members say they are not banning pit bulls but want the regulations followed. The council also voted to increase the distance a pit bull can be walked near schools, playgrounds, and parks to 150 feet.

Fines were also increased for violating the ordnance $250 for a first offense, $500 for a second and $1,000 for subsequent offenses.
