MADISON, WI -- A dog owner's worst nightmare came true Sunday afternoon when his pet was surrounded by three pit bull terriers, who attacked the dog before the pit bulls' owner showed up and took them away, Madison police reported.
The owner, Frank Nobles, 53, of Madison, was issued six citations by police, three for permitting an animal to injure a person other animal, and three for permitting a dog or cat to run at large.
The attack was reported at 12:58 p.m. Sunday in the 6300 block of Raymond Road on the southwest side.
According to police, a 26-year-old Madison man took his boxer on leash Sunday afternoon for a walk, when three unleashed pit bulls came on the scene.
"The boxer's owner said one of the pit bulls began sniffing his dog's crotch, so the boxer growled and that set off the three pit bulls," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.
The report said the attacking dogs were biting the boxer and trying to knock it down.
"The owner picked up the boxer and tried to get away but the pit bulls started jumping at him," DeSpain said. "He dropped his dog and the attack continued, as the boxer curled up into a fetal position."
When the first police officer arrived, the pit bulls were running around before Nobles showed up and took the dogs.
"The officer noted the boxer was bleeding from the face, chest and a paw," DeSpain said.
An animal services officer removed the pit bulls from the owner's home.
