Pit bull fatally shot after charging at police officer

INDIO, CA -- A pit bull that reportedly charged a police officer was fatally shot in Indio late Saturday night.

At about 11:25 p.m. officers were doing a property check at the Plaza del Sol apartment complex on Arabia Street when the medium-size unleashed dog went after the officer in the parking lot, Indio Police Department spokesman Ben Guitron said.

The officer drew his gun and fired when the dog charged at him, Guitron said.

The dog was immediately picked up by the owner and taken to Valley Animal Center in Indio where it died a short time later, Guitron said.

It was unknown why the dog was unleashed or if it was licensed in Indio, Guitron said.
