GEORGIA -- Polk County Animal Control officers Wednesday captured two dogs that reportedly burst through a screened porch at a Cedartown residence and killed a cat.
An elderly woman residing on Loraine Street reported that her cat was mauled to death on her porch around 3 a.m. Wednesday. The dogs forced their way onto the porch after pushing through and tearing off one side of the screen mesh surrounding the back porch.
Jeff Crawford, director, said animal control officers located the two dogs around noon behind the Bojangle’s restaurant, 135 N. Main St. He said the animals are both American pit bull terrier mixed breeds, one male and one female. The male dog’s ears have been clipped.
“The female is in heat, which is probably why the male was running with her,” Crawford said. “They had no collars, no chips under the skin, no rabies tags.”
The dogs will be held for up to five days to give the owners a chance to reclaim the dogs, Crawford said. However, since the owners face a citation for allowing the dogs to run free – and the possibility of a civil lawsuit over the cat’s death – the dogs will probably go unclaimed, Crawford said.
After five days, if not claimed, the dogs will be euthanized, he said.
