Pit bull attacks boy on southwest side

WISCONSIN -- A 9-year-old boy was injured Wednesday afternoon when a pit bull terrier attacked and bit him in the face and arm, police said.

After the attack, the owner voluntarily surrendered the dog to an animal control officer. A Madison police officer indicated the owners most likely would be cited by animal control.

The Madison Police Department reported that the attack by the dog happened at 1:55 p.m. outside a home on Westover Court, near Elver Park on the city's southwest side.

According to the report, the boy was playing outside a friend's home when the friend went inside to get a glass of juice for the victim.

"When he came back outside with the drink, his dog rushed past him and went after the visitor," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.

The pit bull reportedly bit the 9-year-old in the face, then clamped onto his arm.

"The mother of the boy who got the juice, one of the dog's owners, sustained puncture wounds on her hands as she pried the pit bull's jaws off the boy's arm," DeSpain said.

The boy was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
