Owner of attack dog says it's no monster

NEW YORK -- With jagged wounds and more than 100 stitches, two year old Indigo Mullin may never be the same.

But his dad says the boy is awake and talking in a Syracuse hospital.

"It's going to take a long time to heal and as for the nerves, I just don't know how long that's going to take. It could be months. It could be years," said Seth Mullin.

Little Indigo may have startled the animal at the Watertown Farmer's Market on Wednesday, leading to the attack.

[NOTE: Yes, let's try to downplay it. The baby 'startled' the dog, causing it to try to rip his face off. I have 'startled' my sleeping dogs before, and they have never reacted by trying to kill me.]

The owner of the dog, Melissa Felix, has been ticketed for having an unlicensed dog that caused injury.

Not suprisingly, she feels terrible and cried during her interview with 7 News reporter John Moore.

"I understand that that child was extremely injured and I hope everything with that goes well," said Felix.

But Felix wants the public to know that her dog, shown in the above photograph with her own toddler, is no monster.

His name is Breaker and he's an American bulldog.

Owner in denial. "He loves kids. My kids crawl all
him and he hasn't killed them" - yet

"I've a daughter about the same age as the little boy and he (Breaker) is the biggest teddy bear. They'll lie down and take naps together," said Felix.

The incident has some people questioning whether dogs should be allowed at the farmers market, when the area is so crowded with people.

"I really don't think that's the right place to bring animals," said Mullin.

Officials at the Greater Watertown North Country Chamber of Commerce, which runs the market, said they can't comment until their new executive director arrives next week.
