Pit bull bites 18-month-old girl in face

WEST VIRGINIA -- An 18-month old girl was severely injured Wednesday when a family dog bit her face.

St. Albans Police and a St. Albans Humane Officer responded to a call on the 2400 block of Grant Avenue around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

A woman there reported her dog, an adult pit bull mix, bit her granddaughter in the face. The girl's mother also was at the home when the attack occurred.

The dog's owner said the child was left unattended with the dog for a short period of time and may have tried to take a bone away from the animal. She said this is the second time the dog has bitten a family member.

The girl suffered deep cuts on the left side of her face and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
The dog was taken to Academy Animal Hospital in St. Albans for a 10-day isolation.

St. Albans Police Capt. James Agee said charges could be filed if the dog is not euthanized, but said the grandmother intends to have the dog put down.
